Better than Ben & Jerry’s?

What is your favorite comfort food? (This is a no-guilt zone today!) Is it ice-cream? Is it mac and cheese, pizza, pancakes? There is a well-established connection between food and our feelings. It is no secret that many of us are prone to dealing with our stress through eating. C’mon, let’s face it, Ben and Jerry are pretty good therapists! And chocolate has to be the best mood-boosting supplement that I know of! (Disclaimer: today’s blog has not been reviewed or approved by my dietitian wife! All errors and dubious medical facts are strictly my own.)

The events of the last couple of years certainly have done nothing to allay peoples’ fears, anxieties, or stress, have they? If you didn’t have enough worries of your own, with your health, finances, work, or relationships, the news media and social media are delighted to heap more on you! These days you get to worry about conflicts on the far side of the planet, and asteroids that theoretically – might – possibly hit our planet in the next 20 years. If you aren’t wringing your hands about a cheese-maker strike in France, and the threatened extinction of the Tasmanian Spotted Frog, well you obviously aren’t paying attention! It all makes one want to break out a whole gallon of Chunky Monkey!

Don’t get me wrong, I love food as much as the next guy! (OK, maybe even more.) But is there a better way to handle our stress and anxiety? My Bible reading today had me in Psalm 94, where verse 19 really caught my attention.

“In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.”

The Psalmist begins by observing the crimes and distresses that are swirling around the nation. We can certainly identify with his situation! He pleads for God to take notice and act; he ends up asserting by faith that God’s justice will someday prevail. However, all the negative news reports, all the external chaos have a taken a personal toll – it has left him filled with internal turmoil, stress, and anxiety. Can you identify with him? I can! It is at this point he turns to God and finds a blessed peace! It is not that God merely calms his servant, but that he delights his soul with divine comfort! What that tells us is that God doesn’t just send comfort, he doesn’t phone it in. God gives himself! He delights our souls with his very presence! Jesus tells us that God’s Holy Spirit doesn’t merely provide comfort; He is Himself “The Comforter”!

My friend, are you finding yourself assaulted by negative news, and assailed within by anxieties? Turn to Christ and find a comfort that will delight your soul!

Blessings in Christ!

I chose the Greek form of my name as the title for the blog. It means “honoring God”. That is the goal of my life and of my writing. I hope it also encourages you along the way. Thanks for joining me!
